As if 828 vertical meters isn’t high enough for a building, Burj Khalifa which is currently the tallest in the world, will only hold the title for a short while longer. Emaar Properties has planned to surpass its own record just by “a notch”, creating a bigger and better addition to their record winning portfolio.

During a recent press conference Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, revealed that the addition will be the centerpiece of the Dubai Creek redevelopment project.

Roughly $1 billion is estimated to be spent on the development of this building, which is scheduled to commence towards the end of June and will be completed in time for the World Expo trade in 2020 which is hosted in Dubai. The same year 20 million visitors are anticipated, double the amount Dubai received in 2012.

“We wanted to build a new landmark for Dubai,” Alabbar said. “When we look at Downtown and the Burj Khalifa, the area is almost full to the rim.”

Labeled as a “gift to the city”, this new landmark will serve as an elegant monument with a futuristic look, as this is the style of Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, designer of this soon to be Dubai Tower.

According to the company, it will have rotating glass balconies outside the wall of the tower, luxury hotels and 18 to 20 floors of shops, restaurants and other convenient tourist facilities.

As we could have expected, competition arrived soon, and the two towers mentioned above will be put to shame by Saudi Arabia’s much taller tower, the Jeddah Tower. It has been established to reach 1 kilometer high into the atmosphere and is conveniently scheduled to be finalized also by the year 2020.
