Sleep Deprived Technology Workers Allowed Nap Time
I’m not sure about you, but my brain seems to wander off during work, to the extent that even a couple of lattes have cannot help me bounce back. Most of the time, I try to sneak out to my car for a quick nap. And yes, I am ashamed to admit that I have even had a quick power nap in the toilet.
Maybe the lengths most people go to are not so extreme, but I’m willing to bet any full time worker experiences the same thing, almost daily.
Sleep deprivation is an even bigger problem in industries like finance and technology where working hours are long and there are high pressure deadlines to meet. Often, managing six hours of sleep a night calls for a pat on the back.
What is the solution? To install bunk beds in the office and allow a 30-minute “nap time” after lunch and for workers pulling overtime, again after dinner.
Dia Xiang, co-founder of cloud computing firm BaishanCloud in China, installed 12 bunk beds in the office. From his personal experience as a tech worker, where he often pulled 12-16 hour days at the office and then slept overnight on the floor, he realized the importance in promoting a good night’s sleep and creating a space for workers to recharge and relax.
Dian says, “For technology, it’s more of a brain activity. Workers need time to find inspiration.”
Liu Zhanyu, a tech worker for DouMiYouPin, lives at the office from Monday to Friday, mainly to avoid the hour commute to and from his office.
He explains that this is often a common situation in China and working overtime is embedded in the Chinese culture. It does take a toll on the family though. “My daughter pounces on me when I return home.”
