The bank Breaking Ramen, $180 a dish

You’ve heard of ramen right? The quintessential student meal, often stocked knee deep in dormitory closets, where they lie waiting for the time those poor souls only have a few dollars left for the week and don’t have enough money for a well-balanced meal.

While you can often find this sort of ramen on special, 3 for $1 or something along those lines, or even score a top notch ramen at any upper end noodle bar from $10-15, a Japanese restaurant in New York City has taken the classic street budget dish to the extreme.

Koa, an upper end Japanese establishment headed by Chef Yuji Wakiya, winner of Japan’s Iron Chef, prices their ramen noodles at $180 a dish, claiming to have the world’s most expensive bowl of ramen.

You’re probably asking the same question we all have. “Will we get a flying pig with the bowl of ramen?” Unfortunately, the answer is no. Instead, you will find yourself chowing down on Japanese imported Wagyu beef, truffles, and edible 24-karat gold flakes. The meal is served in specialty, handmade dishes that come with one-of-a-kind gold colored chopsticks that you can even take home as a souvenir.

If you are interested in splurging a little and holding the claim of eating the world’s most expensive ramen, be aware, you need to book your meal at least six hours in advance.

While the dish has received a lot of attention and publicity in previous months, likely achieving just what the restaurant wanted, many people have said that the $180 dish goes against the spirit of the dish. Ramen is, and should always be, street food.

The restaurant admits the meal has been far from popular, and in the time the dish has been available, only two people have ordered it. For those that visit and can’t afford to spend more than a day’s wage on a bowl of ramen, they have other options available, $10 at lunch and $14 at dinner.
